Explore the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for treating infectious diseases in animals, enhancing recovery through increased oxygen delivery and immune support.

Though the clinical application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in human medicine has been practiced for many years, it is somewhat new in veterinary medicine. Not many hospitals or veterinary clinics facilitate HBOT due to inadequate command of the technique. Nonetheless, the therapy has exhibited excellent results in controlling infections and speeding up recovery. It is well tolerated by most animals, including canines, felines, equines, rodents and others.

HBOT is often used as the primary treatment or as a supportive cure for non-healing wounds and infectious diseases by boosting the antimicrobial effects of the body’s natural immunity. Lyme, osteomyelitis, septicemia, intracranial abscess, abdominal abscess, necrotizing fasciitis, blastomycosis, endotoxemia, and septic arthritis can be effectively managed and cured through HBOT.

           What Happens in HBOT?

HBOT is a short-term treatment aiding faster recovery of non-healing infections, including skin conditions, inflammations, respiratory distress, open wounds, brain and spine trauma, post-operative trauma, and injuries. When infections spread, it evokes life-threatening circumstances. Chronic illness, tissue damage, and organ failure are the prevalent health complications arising from uncontrolled infection advancements.

So, how does HBOT work? As we know, oxygen is the core of sustenance for living beings. However, under normal atmospheric pressure, human beings and animals cannot breathe 100% oxygen. It means the concentration of oxygen is reduced in blood, which is circulated throughout the body. In such cases, it cuts the supply of oxygen-rich blood to affected tissues, especially when patients have ruptured blood vessels. It significantly affects the healing of infections in the animal body, sometimes leading to tissue death and organ failure.

            But, in hyperbaric

           oxygen therapy for animals,

patients are exposed to 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber for a certain period. The HBOT capsule is a large chamber where animals are placed safely. It has enough room to stand, sit, or lie. Depending on the type and condition of the infection, 1.4 to 3 ATA (atmospheric absolute) higher air pressure is released. As a result, animals can breathe 100% oxygen. It increases oxygen concentration in the blood. Saturated oxygen in the blood can now reach the affected areas in the animal body. Hence, it restores tissue repair through new blood vessel generation.

A potential benefit of HBOT is that it eliminates the need for invasive techniques to cure wounds, injuries, or trauma. Animals can undergo a painless procedure to treat infectious diseases, promoting a better-quality life. It is noted that abundant oxygen releases respiratory distress, calming and soothing the mind.

           How Does HBOT Control Infections?

As we said, HBOT can successfully treat canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRDC). It is commonly called kennel cough. CIRDC is a viral or bacterial infection of the respiratory tract in a dog. Though symptoms may be often self-limiting, there may be an uncontrolled outbreak when it spreads rapidly among dogs. In CIRDC, the trachea and bronchia become inflamed, causing cough, sneezing, and nasal discharge.

Thankfully, HBOT can promote swift recovery through antimicrobial effects and boosting the immune system! As reported, hyperbaric oxygen therapy regulates tissue inflammations and stimulates cytokines. Inflammations in tissue cause hypoxia or low oxygen concentration. It weakens the immune system, delaying recovery. Hence, the infection aggravates.

However, with a significant increase in the oxygen level of the tissues, the bacteria-killing capacity of neutrophils (white blood cells) increases too. Let’s tell you that microbes cannot survive in an oxygen-toxic environment. They are anaerobic microorganisms that get increased resistance in depleted oxygen levels. Thus, as the neutrophils become more active and microorganisms become weak, it develops a favorable condition to kill these germs.

Not just respiratory diseases but other infections of soft tissues and bones, like Lyme disease, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, intracranial abscess, necrotizing infections, abdominal abscess, etc. It has exhibited remarkable recovery in animals as they developed improved immunity, healthier skin and fur, boosted energy, and happier living.

           Final Thoughts

In the current scenario, a large number of pathogens have developed resistance to antibiotics. It has considerably affected the proper management of diverse infectious diseases. HBOT has brought a revolutionary transformation in the veterinary as it has eased the treatment of various non-healing infections that have compromised the well-being of vets. With further advancements in technology, we hope HBOT explore other possible scopes of treating complicated illnesses and enhancing the lives of animals.

Hyperbaric therapy is based on the principle of oxygen hyper-saturation in blood. It collectively induces numerous cellular, biochemical, and physiologic effects, assisting in increased oxygen circulation to damaged tissues. Ideally, hyperbaric therapy facilitates healing wounds and injuries through faster tissue repair.

           How does the therapy work?

Let’s tell you that the therapy is based on simple gas laws. Under normal atmospheric pressure, a living body ie: you, me and animals

do not breathe 100% oxygen. As we know, red blood cells carry oxygen-rich blood. Nonetheless, this oxygen is in limited amounts when exposed to the usual atmospheric pressure. What does it mean? The cells receive only a certain amount of oxygen, which is not sufficient to heal damaged tissue. So, the natural healing process becomes slow and sometimes unfruitful.

The Equine hyperbaric oxygen chamber does the job! It is a stainless-steel chamber capsule with sliding doors. The animal is placed inside. Under pressurized oxygen animals breathe 100% oxygen, and the blood becomes hyper-saturated. It means that as oxygen intake increases, the hemoglobin in the blood becomes fully saturated. This extra oxygen dissolves in the plasma and is carried to various parts of the body.

The K9 (dog) and feline chambers are glass. These chambers enable the circulation of more oxygen to the damaged tissues.. Enhanced oxygen delivery aids in faster healing of wounds, inflammations, ischemic injuries, fungal diseases, burns, cellulitis, CNS traumas, etc.

Unhealthy tissues require abundant oxygen to heal properly. Insufficient local oxygen delays healing, causing more complications. Thankfully, with advanced technology like hyperbaric therapy, it is now possible to treat animals faster!

How Does Hyperbaric Therapy Promote Healing?

One of the major causes of pain is inflammation of soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Edema or tissue swelling restricts blood and lymphatic circulation. As the local pressure increases due to inflammation, there may be tissue hypoxia when the circulatory system is severely disrupted. It often results in life-threatening conditions like breathing difficulty, restlessness, and increased heart rate. However, hyperbaric therapy reduces edema or tissue inflammation through boosted oxygen supply.

Fungal and bacterial infections are common with open wounds. As a result, the healing process becomes slow, and sometimes wounds become more severe. But, to pathogens, a hyper-oxygenated environment is toxic because of enhanced superoxide levels. In such conditions, anaerobic microorganisms cannot live. Hence, these

             Blood Flow Restoration-

Restricted blood flow to impaired tissues slows healing due to lack of oxygen supply. It is called ischemia. This happens when major blood vessels get blocked or become damaged. Prolonged ischemia is life-threatening, especially if it affects the tissues in the heart and brain. Nonetheless, hyper-saturation in plasma can supply adequate oxygen to the constricted areas, promoting tissue restoration.

             Encourage Cell Division-

The healing of a wound depends extensively on the formation of new cells. This means that cell division is the fundamental factor affecting the curing of wounds. Lack of enough oxygen does not aid cell proliferation, which significantly results in delayed healing and sometimes the spread of infections. Luckily, hyperbaric therapy promotes cell division by improving cytokinesis.

           Conclusion

No wonder hyperbaric therapy is an innovative and highly effective treatment aiding faster healing and recovery. It enables better management of wounds, traumas, injuries, and diseases without side effects. Combined with conventional medications and surgical procedures, hyperbaric therapy ensures superior results.

What is Cryotherapy and How Does It Work?

In 2022, it’s almost impossible not to have heard about cryotherapy. Boosted by social media, this wellness treatment is used by some of the biggest celebrities and athletes in the world who claim it can improve sleep, burn fat, reduce pain, tighten skin, and more. But does it really work, and if so, how? In this blog post, we’ll uncover the basics of cryotherapy, how it works, and its benefits!

           What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy involves using cold temperatures as the primary healing component of all therapeutic processes.Whole-body cryotherapy involves stepping into a chamber cooled by nitrogen gases. The subzero temperatures instantly shock the body and send it into a fight or flight mode. Blood vessels constrict, and blood is redirected to core organs to survive. After exiting the chamber, blood vessels immediately dilate, rushing oxygen-rich blood and endorphins back through the body. The body also produces a boost of anti-inflammatory proteins, rids excess white blood cells, and boosts metabolic rate.

Understanding Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for horses.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is certainly not new, but it is a relative newcomer to Equine Medicine.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment in which a patient is placed in an open design chamber that allows the horse to move around, and is exposed to oxygen at several times the normal atmospheric pressure. Long used for the treatment of humans, the equine industry has been relatively slow to pick up on the therapy.

           How Does it Work?

The amount of oxygen that red blood cells can carry is limited under normal atmospheric pressure, meaning that only a small amount of oxygen is dissolved back into the plasma. Increasing just the amount of oxygen breathed cannot significantly improve oxygen delivery to the body through haemoglobin, but, with increased pressure, the oxygen level in the plasma increases, which yields higher delivery to tissues and organs.

When a patient is given 100 per cent oxygen under pressure, the haemoglobin becomes saturated and the blood itself can also be hyper-oxygenated by dissolving oxygen within the plasma. So, as the pressure of the oxygen is increased in the hyperbaric chamber, the amount of oxygen being inhaled increases; the haemoglobin in the red blood cells becomes 100 per cent saturated with oxygen; and the excess oxygen is dissolved into the blood plasma – the fluid of the blood then becoming hyper-oxygenated itself.

The principle goal of the treatment is not only to saturate the haemoglobin to 100 per cent, but also to dissolve the oxygen into the fluid and protein of the blood, thus allowing the oxygen to be diffused into the peripheral tissues – like the muscles and brain – at increased levels. This also allows oxygen to reach damaged tissues not able to be accessed due to broken-down vessels or hindered circulation because of injury or infection.

Hyperbaric oxygen chamber therapy increases the oxygen concentration in all body tissues. Because improved oxygen delivery and stimulation of capillary formation assists in the healing of wounds in skin and muscle tissue, it is especially beneficial in injuries where circulation has been impaired.

“The number one application is definitely in the treatment of a deep infection such as an infection to the bone or into the tendon sheath."

Due to the chamber’s ability to provide oxygenation to damaged tissues, other benefits include the restoration of blood flow to reduce swelling. By minimising inflammation and swelling, it can also dramatically minimise the destruction of tissue structures within the hoof in some cases of laminitis. It is also reported to have success in reproduction programs to increase the libido of aging stallions.

           Summary of key features:

It stimulates tissue healing by reducing swelling.

It increases cell division in the endothelial cells that line the blood capillaries.

It increases division within the fibro-blasts the cells that make collagen.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves the use of a chamber in which a horse can breathe in 100% oxygen at a pressure higher than atmospheric pressure. This increased pressure allows more oxygen to be dissolved into the horse's bloodstream, which can have a range of therapeutic benefits. Here are some of the ways in which HBOT can be beneficial for horses:

Wound healing: One of the most well-known benefits of HBOT is its ability to promote wound healing. The increased oxygen supply can stimulate the growth of new blood vessels and promote the formation of collagen, which is a key component of healthy skin and connective tissue. This can be especially useful for horses with chronic wounds or injuries that are slow to heal.

Infection control: Oxygen has antimicrobial properties, so HBOT can help to kill bacteria and other pathogens that may be present in wounds or other infected areas. This can help to reduce the risk of infection and promote faster healing.

Reducing inflammation: Hyperbaric oxygen can help to reduce inflammation by increasing the production of certain signaling molecules that inhibit inflammation. This can be helpful in the treatment of conditions such as arthritis or tendonitis, where inflammation is a key factor.

Improving brain function: HBOT has been shown to have positive effects on brain function in both humans and animals. In horses, it has been used to improve cognitive function in cases of traumatic brain injury or stroke.

Enhancing athletic performance: Some studies have suggested that HBOT may improve athletic performance in horses by increasing the oxygen supply to muscles and enhancing recovery after exercise.

Overall, HBOT can be a useful tool in the treatment of a range of conditions in horses. It is generally considered to be safe, with few side effects, although it is important to follow recommended guidelines for use. As with any medical treatment, it is important to consult with a veterinarian before starting HBOT to determine if it is appropriate for your horse.

5 ways to fill your stables with clients

           1. Up your marketing game

Many people rely on word-of-mouth within the horse owner’s community, and while this can work, by marketing your stable you can immediately begin the conversation instead of waiting for someone else to talk for you.

By showing horse owners how using your stables will revolutionise their lives, new clients will begin flooding in.

Not enough stable owners are using social media to market their stables, or even to create an online presence, which is such a shame because you can use these tools to attract new clients, AND build customer loyalty

Although, this will play into your hands, because you will have less competition on social media platforms...

           2. Hold special fun-days

Most stables hold special activity days, and this can be anything from competitions, to children’s activity days.

The most important thing is that you get people visiting your stables, whatever the occasion.

Once people are in your stables, they will see first-hand why your stable is special.

           3. Keep your stables attractive

Sometimes all it takes is a fresh lick of paint to transform the appearance of a place.

Of course, a stable is the home to an animal so it isn’t going to be completely pristine, but by keeping the appearance of your property at its best, you will ensure that your clients will be proud of their horse’s stable, and will boast about you to others.

Also, when you have people visiting your stables to attend events (see the second point), if they see somewhere which is aesthetically pleasing, they will naturally be more inclined to enquire about your vacancies.

           4. Have a special USP

Have something which makes you stand out from the crowd.

Having a USP (a unique selling point) gives you a reason why you are better than your competition.

This could be your personal expertise, or a certain product or service you offer.

           5. Make your stables dog-friendly or kid-friendly

This can really take your stables a warm and friendly environment.

Of course, you will need to take some extra safety precautions, but the community really appreciate the atmosphere of a stable which is all-inclusive.

      The Struggle for Veterinarians

Post-surgery, the risks of bacterial infection are high. The pet owners are stressed, possibly irate. The pressure is on to have the animal recover safely, and quickly. You have to make extra precautions to avoid bacterial infection, which takes up money and attention.

Often, the spaces in post-operative care can be quickly filled and if the retention times aren’t efficient, you feel overwhelmed and unable to care for as many patients as possible due to the lack of vacancies.

      Using a Hyperbaric Chamber

The process of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a relaxing experience, the animal will sit inside a chamber, which is not a dark, enclosed space , in fact the animal can see everything that is happening outside of the chamber.

Often the pet will fall asleep during the treatment, which just goes to show how the atmosphere can be really calming for everyone involved during the process.

      What Can It Do?

    Oxygen therapy has many benefits:

     - Anti-aging

     - Enhance Animal Vitality

     - Prevention of Obesity Caused by Lack of Exercise

     - Reducing Body Odour, Making Animal’s Fur Shiny & Supple

     - Accelerate Wound Healing

     - Prevention of Bacterial Infection

      )

Of course, post surgery, accelerating wound healing is a major help for the veterinary surgery because it will speed up retention times, allowing for the surgery to help more animals.

      And the Pet Owners?

Pet owners greatly appreciate the non-invasive nature of oxygen treatment, along with the benefit of their furry child getting better, sooner.

Plus, the treatment is relatively inexpensive which is always an added bonus for the owners who want the best for their animal.

Water treadmills are revolutionary to the physiotherapy and rehabilitation process. They are treadmills inside an open tank which you can fill with the appropriate amount of water for each client.

Water treadmills relieve the pressure on joints and make exercising the muscle much easier. The animal’s weight is distributed better in the water which helps ease them into using their muscles and joints in a gentle, and yet effective way.

The low impact, active muscle concentration, increases the range of motion in the joint and a lengthened stride in the water promotes the restoration of normal function. It helps the patient to exercise in an upwards position which encourages normal posture and gait, as well as greatly increasing the animal’s confidence.

Often when swimming, animals do not make effective use of their hind limbs, therefore cannot exercise those limbs very well. Whereas, in a water treadmill, you can even control their movement and even focus where you would like the animal to concentrate muscle use by making use of the adjustable treadmill.

The chamber itself is also less intimidating for patients who are scared by water, the tank fills up gradually from the bottom, rather than throwing them in the deep end - literally!

Veterinary school is a vibrant hub of learning for all aspiring veterinarians, but there are some practical procedures, tips, and tricks that you will use in the workplace once you have graduated.

It’s a scary one, no doubt, but it’s a truth we shouldn’t shy away from. In fact, if you prepared for any situation, then you can get yourself out of any compromising situation. As the scouts say ‘Always be prepared’.

So how do veterinarians deal with these situations? Here are a few simple articles teaching you how to behave if an animal is becoming more aggressive.

      The Essentials

Once you begin your career, there will be certain pieces of equipment that you will be using all the time. We don’t mean the medical or surgical equipment, but actually some practical pieces of kit you will need that will not be provided.

It goes without saying that whatever profession you are in, having a pen or pencil on hand is always useful, and yet they always seem to go for ‘walkies’ so it is good practice to have your own stationary on hand.

If you are out and about working with farm animals, keep items such as duct tape and rope - no, you aren’t conducting a heist, but these are actually really useful! The duct tape is great for keeping wool or fibre out of the way during abdominal surgery, and the rope is so useful for all sorts of jobs, tying gates shut, keeping your animals contained, etc..

You will have bandage scissors provided for you, but if you can get your hands on your own pair, you can choose a pair you really like. It might sound silly, but if you buy them, you can find a pair you really like and that work really well, which will make your life a lot easier.

      Stay Smiley!

When you are doing all you can for animals and their owners aren’t appreciative or even plain rude, it can be difficult to maintain a positive demeanour. It’s really important to remember that these people are stressing out because their pet, their family member is sick.

Learning to stay professional when your clients are being irate is a trick that is so important to master, and you’ll only start being able to practice this trick when you begin working.

      You Got This!

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is revolutionising the veterinary field, and it is saving many lives.

Being a relatively new treatment in the field, not many know the basic procedure... do you?

The animals could need to use the hyperbaric oxygen chambers for various reasons - maybe the patient has just had surgery, for patients at a high risk of bacterial infection, or even cosmetic reasons like making the animal’s fur shiny and supple.

Once the decision has been made, and both parties agree to the procedure (that is, the veterinary and the owners), how do you prepare an animal for the chamber?

Firstly, if the therapy is being used for healing, the surgical procedure will need to be finished before the chamber is used.

Then the surgeon or veterinary needs to decide how long the animal will spend in the chamber, and this can range from 30 minutes to multiple hours. Of course, each case is different, so it’s natural that the times prescribed will fluctuate.

It may be that the animal needs some sedation to keep them relaxed throughout the process.

Once the animal is inside one of our hyperbaric chambers (link) they will be able to see their owner, which is a very important feature that keeps the pet’s stress level low.

Hyperbaric chambers, the name is ambiguous.

‘Hyperbaric’ isn’t a word that we use in day-to-day language, so what does it mean?

Well, first of all, hyperbaric would directly be translated as ‘over pressure’ - or high pressure.

HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment) has been used on humans since the 1940’s, it was originally used to treat deep-sea diver’s decompression sickness.

And they still do, but now doctors use oxygen therapy treatment for various ailments in human patients.

Naturally, because after discoveries in the field uncovered the various benefits the oxygen chambers were having, more uses for HBOT came to light over time.

Oxygen chambers aren’t a new phenomenon in the veterinary field either; in fact they first started being used in veterinary medicine in 1988 as a therapeutic treatment.

Since then, it has been used as part of the treatment for smoke inhalation, and rattlesnake bites, not to mention all the post-surgery treatments.

Hyperbaric chambers allow the body to absorb higher levels of oxygen by having the patient sit in a pressurised environment and breathing increased levels of oxygen.

As mentioned perhaps one of the most obvious uses for HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment) is for the treatment of smoke inhalation.

It helps to flush out and replace the carboxyhemoglobin in the bloodstream by increasing the intake of oxygen.

The oxygen treatments have been found to accelerate wound healing, and prevent bacterial infection. If you are interested about the benefits of a hyperbaric oxygen treatments can have on your animals, visit the about page

           here

. These two factors are vitally important after surgery, and the effects of the two complications are potentially fatal in many cases.

Consequently, the need to retain patients to keep them under observation after surgery takes longer than needed when HBOT is not used.

Oxygen therapy can allow for patients to heal faster by delivering blood saturated with oxygen and nutrients to the body, allowing oxygen to reach affected areas, such as tears in the flesh, where it would usually be difficult for oxygen to reach.

This means that this process takes longer than is necessary, whereas when using Hyperbaric oxygen treatment, the retention times can be reduced, allowing more patients to be seen to and potentially more animals’ lives being saved.

And we know that should be the most important focus for a veterinary clinic.

Clients will see the effect the HBOT treatment is having on their animals, and several veterinary clinics in the USA can testify to this.

The last report in 2016 said that 44 US vet clinics had hyperbaric animal chambers, and we know that since then the number has shot up significantly in the US.

For good reason too, these chambers are an exciting medical development that intrigues pet owners and keeps them coming back again and again, as well as attracting new clients.

A new therapy is available that can help animals with all manner of medical problems. Just some of the many issues it can address， Cranial or spinal chord trauma, athletic injuries, shock, acute anemia, pulmonary edema, wounds like burns or snakebites, infectious diseases like Lyme disease, pancreatitis…the list goes on (and on).

Oxygen—plain, but not so simple. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been used in human medicine for over 20 years, healing injuries and saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Now, hyperbaric chambers for animals are available! The testimonials from veterinarians employing this healing modality are amazing and even a tortoise has benefitted from the therapy．

      How it works?

The chamber delivers high purity oxygen at a greater than normal atmospheric pressure (the patient just breathes it in), more oxygen to the tissues than breathing normal room air. This provides immediate help to compromised tissue, particularly that with marginal blood flow. Hyper-oxygenation of the tissue has tremendous success in curing deep-seated, resistant infection. In addition, the increased air pressure constricts small vessels, decreasing edema, which is especially important in treating burns and crushed tissue injuries. It also increases collateral blood flow, helping injured tissue heal while killing anaerobic bacteria and decreasing inflammation. The positive results seen in challenging cases is remarkable, healing persistent wounds such as that of a cat who suffered from an open wound for three years. Pretty amazing stuff! Over 20,000 pets have benefited thus far．
